Mary Effie Snowshoe spent her early years on the land with her parents. Then the
family moved into Fort McPherson, where there was a store. Mary loved buying candy.
Mary Effie's parents enrolled her in the day school. She spoke Gwich'in but some of her
classmates could speak and read English. That made Mary Effie feel shy.
One day, one of Mary Effie's classmates, Wally Firth, offered to help her learn to read.
How did he do that?
Later, Wally fell ill. He couldn't go to school so he took classes by correspondence.
Meanwhile, Mary Effie continued her school work alone.
Mary Effie went to college and became a Gwich'in language translator and a teacher.
She is still grateful for her friendship with Wally.
What lessons can we learn from the friendship of Wally and Mary Effie?
