In the summer of 1975, delegates from Dene communities met in Fort Simpson to consider a bold statement of their rights: the Dene Declaration. Days after it was adopted, the Berger Inquiry opened community hearings in the Sahtu. At those hearings, the issue of a Dene land claim was of primary importance.
